Protected by thicker Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and a stronger 7000-series aluminum frame, the panels boast slimmer bezels and a specialized low-reflective coating on the top bezel to better conceal the front-facing sensors. Memory profiles diverged by model size; the standard S9 pairs 4 GB of RAM with 64 GB of storage, whereas the larger S9+ upgrades to 6 GB of RAM and expands internal configurations to include 64 GB, 128 GB, or 256 GB of UFS 2.1 storage, both accommodating microSD expansion up to 400 GB. Non-removable Lithium-Ion batteries match the previous generation's capacities at 3000 mAh (S9) and 3500 mAh (S9+), utilizing a USB-C port for 15W wired Adaptive Fast Charging and fast dual-standard wireless charging. This generation also updated its desktop docking capabilities via the flat-laying DeX Pad, which permitted the phone's screen to function as a touchpad or keyboard. Imaging stands as the generation's marquee upgrade, introducing a Super Speed Dual Pixel 12 MP main camera module built with a mechanical, variable Dual Aperture system (f/1.5 and f/2.4) that physically shifts like a human iris to match lighting conditions.
